Ideas are elusive, slippery things. Best to keep a pad of
paper and a pencil at your bedside, so you can stab them
during the night before they get away.

Come Back to Me

June 30th, 2002

for Heather

So you’re going away.
You’re going your way.
While we linger here,
The child cries with tears.

“Do you not love me, Daddy?
Why are you going away?
Please come back to me, Daddy,
Come kiss me once more, I pray.”

You don’t say a word.
You climb in your Ford.
But her words you heard,
As sharp as a sword.

“Please come back to me, Daddy!
I love you so very much,
Please don’t leave me here, Daddy,
I’ll die without your touch.”

So you’re going away.
You’re going your way.
As we linger here,
The child cries with tears.
