December 17th, 2007I laughed my ass off at this letter to the editor - comments below it echoed the main sentiment of the readers on the site I found it, as noted in my post title.
… and just to be nice and tell the truth, yes, the letter is a hoax. Here is what the newspaper had to say about it

Amusing and yet strange. It’s all very American. A hoax letter like this wouldn’t be published here [in Australia] because it’s not such an issue, whereas i was taken in by the letter as saying bluntly what a lot of Americans seem to be saying [bluntly]. But the response to it is a sign of hope - the majority feel she is wrong in her intolerance even if they share her belief that atheism’s wrong. Hoax letters can apparently have some value in testing public attitudes.

No really, seriously… Seriously… *stutters for a while* Soudns very close minded, then again that seems to be what religion does to alot of people.
How someone can mis-interpret the whole ‘freedom’ thing so completely is just hilarious and sad at the same time. At the end of the day we’re trying to build a world based on tolerance and freedom of living however we want as long as we don’t hut anyone else. Doesn’t freedom of religion imply freedom to beleive whatever, and respect whatever anyone else believes (or doesn’t believe)? Funny how ‘freedom’ and ‘religion’ have become some of the most twisted and misused terms of the 21st…
